In this exhibition curated by Taiyana Pimentel, a parallel is drawn between the post-conceptual and historically immersive practices for which García Torres is known, and the beginnings of his aesthetic strategies developed in the cities of Monterrey and Mexico City. Through early works, the show examines the implications of space and landscape—concepts that emerged during his formative years in the city that welcomed him, and that have continued to shape his artistic practice. Based on this premise, works such as the painting Cerro de la Silla (1998) and the video Open Letter to Dr. Atl (2005), made in Guadalajara, can be appreciated.
The Poetics of Return presents a selection of works, most of which have been shown in international venues but are being exhibited in the city for the first time. These include: Merz, Rzemmmm Zeeeeerm Emrzzzzz (At Fibonacci Pace), n.d.; The Schilieren Plot (2013); La Fiesta fue ayer (a fragmented narrative about the brief history of the Museo Dinámico), n.d.; Unspoken Dailies (2003–2009); Tetela (2015); and Silence’s Wearing Thin Here Mario García, n.d., among others.
