The Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art presents José Bedia: Circular Journey, a retrospective that takes visitors on a journey through the artist’s own work and the ancestral cultures that influence him. Curated by Taiyana Pimentel, director of MARCO, and José Bedia Fuertes, director of the artist’s studio, the exhibition brings together 102 works of art, mostly paintings, drawings, and installations.
The title of the exhibition refers to an introspective journey in terms of culture and identity, as Bedia’s art blurs the boundaries between the indigenous peoples of Latin America through the symbolic, the primal, and the sacred, making the past act as an active value in the present. In this way, the artist creates a symbiosis between primal cultures and contemporary art.
In 1997, MARCO exhibited American Chronicles: Works by José Bedia, focusing on the influence of the ancestral cultures of the American continent, most of which were created during that decade. Now, in the exhibition Circular Journey, his creations from 2000 to the present predominate, but early creations are also included, the oldest dating back to 1978.
The exhibition José Bedia. Circular Journey consists of a selection of 102 works. Two installations will be located at the beginning and end of the exhibition. The arrival of Christ will welcome the public, while Mbwa Ndoki will be found at the end. The vast majority of the works are concentrated in sections that reflect his stages of production from different periods and interests.
