The Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey presents 50 Years of Hyperrealist Sculpture, a selection of 31 sculptures by 25 of the movement’s most representative artists, highlighting the multiple ways of treating the human figure, its relationship with various expressions of art history, and its technical evolution from its beginnings to the current digital age. This is the first exhibition organized with the aim of presenting an in-depth review of human figuration throughout the more than fifty years of hyperrealism’s existence.
Since the 1960s and 1970s, various sculptors have been interested in a form of realism based on the vivid and faithful representation of the human figure. Through the use of traditional techniques such as modeling, casting, and painting, they recreated the body using different approaches, but with the common goal of creating a contemporary interpretation of figurative realism.
The selection of works includes prominent hyperrealist sculptors, beginning with American pioneers George Segal, Duane Hanson, and John DeAndrea; continuing with Spain’s Juan Muñoz, Italy’s Maurizio Cattelan, Belgium’s Berlinde de Bruyckere, Australia’s Ron Mueck, Sam Jinks, and Patricia Piccinini, and Canada’s Evan Penny, among others.
Through works that surprise the viewer with their convincing appearance of reality, the exhibition highlights the international character of hyperrealism and its continued relevance.
