MARCO presents the exhibition Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Unstable Presence, a major museographic review of the work of the renowned Mexican artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (Mexico City, 1967), presented in Mexico for the first time. The exhibition offers a new perspective on the artist’s production over the past eighteen years, exploring its poetic and political dimensions through the notion of co-presence.
This concept primarily refers to the coexistence of viewpoints, active voices, and singular experiences within Lozano-Hemmer’s creations: the relationships formed between spectators, as well as the situations produced by the dialogic devices employed in the work. It also alludes to more asymmetrical types of relationships, forced cohabitations, and issues of power, evoking questions of observation, the interaction of gazes, and bodies subjected to today’s numerous surveillance and control techniques.
