The Contemporary Art Museum of Monterrey presents the work of Ai Weiwei (Beijing, 1957), an artist who has secured a place among the world’s most important exponents of conceptual art, a social media phenomenon, political activist, and committed defender of freedom of expression and human rights. Through the exhibition Ai Weiwei: Restoring Memories, the artist confronts the traumas of two experiences that pose an ethical obligation to construct social memory.

On one hand, the exhibition explores the destruction of China’s cultural heritage through a silent testimony of the material itself; on the other, it presents his project addressing the void left in Mexican society by the disappearance of the Ayotzinapa students, who were abducted by criminal forces and public authorities in Iguala, Guerrero, in September 2014.
