The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO) presents ¿Neomexicanismos? Ficciones identitarias del México de los ochenta [Neo-Mexicanisms? Identitary Fictions from Mexico in the 1980s], a survey of a decade of artistic work that appropriates diverse iconic resources from Mexican popular culture, mass media, religion, pre-Hispanic heritage, and national history.

More than a hundred works by artists from Mexico City who enriched Mexican art in the last part of the twentieth century are included in this exhibition that exalts the aesthetic and socio-political worth of an entire artistic generation. Their work reveals how identity is a construction; if not fictitious, at least fictional.

The exhibition was organized by the Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) in Mexico City under the curatorial direction of Josefa Ortega.
