The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO) presents Beyond the landscape. Abstraction in the MACG collection, an exhibition organized by the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (MACG) that brings together the work of the artists Gunther Gerzso, Wolfgang Paalen, Luis Nishizawa, Kishio Murata and Mathias Goeritz, who explored the landscape as a means of abstraction. Temporal coincidence and aesthetic motives serve as the conceptual axis of this exhibition.

Although Dr. Alvar Carrillo Gil (1898-1974) began collecting abstract art since the mid-1950s, his predilection for these artists converged on specific periods of his creation and shows the close relationship between figurative nature and abstract lines. For example, Gunther Gerzso was defined as a “natural abstract landscapist” for the paintings he created following his tours of the archaeological sites of the south of the country. Even Carrillo Gil related the forms of the microbiological world to the plastic work of Gerzso in the conference titled “The natural of the abstract art”, presented in the frame of the great exhibition of the artist in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1963.

The collector had a special taste for the color of the works of Kishio Murata, who simulated the gardens of Musashino in Japan, as is the case of the oil Autumn. While from Goeritz exhibits works from a graphic portfolio, owned by the artist’s family, in which he investigated the pictographs of the Altamira caves and from Wolfgang Paalen show oils about the exploration of the Mexican topography.

Of the selection of artists, attention is drawn to the case of Luis Nishizawa, because Carrillo Gil acquired from him only a series of drawings about the observation of clouds and stones. In these works, is noticeable the link between abstraction and the landscape is evident, the only thing that interested the collector of the painter.

Each section of this exhibition is dedicated to a particular creator. The public could find explanations about the production period of each one and the highlights of these works.

Beyond the landscape. Abstraction in the MACG collection will remain open to the public from June 30 to October 22, 2017. It belongs to the collection of works of the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (MACG).
